When buying an aquarium they often come with hoods as part of the package, but it is important to make sure that the hood meets the requirements of your aquatic life.
Any aquarium hood can sometimes be worse than not having one at all. Some "experts" will say that it is important for an aquarium to have a full hood that covers the entire top of the aquarium. Full hoods can be helpful to reduce deadly temperature fluctuations in an aquarium and to reduce the amount of water evaporation into the air.
First off, if you need a hood to keep your aquarium at a stable temperature than the location that you have your aquarium in is either much too cold or much too hot. Secondly, it is important for the surface of the water to be able to exchange gases with air moving above it. So, rather than having a full hood to reduce temperature fluctuations and water evaporation, just make sure you store your tank in a location that stays within 10 degrees fereinheight of your water temperature and |
