i have an Eheim 2322 external filter for my aquarium, how often should i clean it out and replace the media et?
Definitely subjective to the size of tank and the amount of waste being produced. They are essentially bio filters and up to a point the more muck they have inside them, the better they work.
Personally I have a single rule for all my filters. When the output drops, it’s time to dismantle it.
Change the carbon when you do it, but only rinse the other medium in old tank water. If you change it, that’s a massive bacteria colony you have killed and your tank will go into a mini cycle.
One thing that sometimes gets forgotten; pull through the pipes. You need a weight that fits, string and either a tobacco brush pipe cleaner or a thin rag. The pipes are responsible for most blockages.
